Children's Hospital Breaks Ground on New Wing to Address Bed Shortage

A regional children's hospital has broken ground on a new patient wing adding forty pediatric beds, addressing years of operating at or above capacity that has been especially acute during winter respiratory illness surges when the hospital has occasionally had to transfer patients to out-of-region facilities.

Hospital administrators say the capacity crunch reflects both regional population growth and the consolidation of pediatric specialty care, as smaller community hospitals have scaled back or eliminated pediatric inpatient units, pushing more complex pediatric cases toward the region's remaining full-service children's hospital.

"We're often the only option within a couple hours' drive for certain pediatric subspecialty care," the hospital's chief medical officer said. "When we're full, families don't have many alternatives nearby."

The expansion, funded through a combination of bond financing and philanthropic donations, will also add dedicated isolation rooms designed to handle respiratory illness surges without requiring the hospital to convert other unit types on short notice, a workaround it has relied on in recent difficult winters. Construction is expected to take approximately two years to complete.
