Elaborate Nail Art Trend Pushes Average Manicure Prices Higher in Philadelphia

Average manicure prices at several Philadelphia nail salons have risen over the past two years, a trend salon owners attribute to clients increasingly requesting elaborate, multi-hour designs popularized on social media rather than standard single-color services.
"A basic manicure used to be our most common booking," said one Fishtown salon owner. "Now the most common request involves multiple design elements that can take two to three times as long."
Salons have responded by introducing tiered pricing structures that charge separately for base service, design complexity, and add-ons like hand-painted charms or embedded decorative elements, replacing simpler flat-rate menus common a few years ago.
Nail technicians say the shift has required additional training investment, as detailed nail art demands a different skill set than standard manicures. Several salons have begun offering specialized art training to existing staff rather than hiring separately for the service, citing a shortage of technicians who arrive already skilled in detailed nail art.
Client feedback on the pricing changes has been mixed, with some longtime clients pushing back on costs for services they used to receive at a flat rate.
