Blowout appointment bookings at a longtime Scranton salon declined noticeably over the past two years, a trend owner Teresa Lin traces directly to clients purchasing higher-quality styling tools for home use, some priced well over $300.

Rather than treat the trend as a threat, Lin began offering monthly small-group styling classes, teaching clients how to get salon-quality results with their own tools at home, priced as a standalone service rather than a loss leader.

"I decided if people were going to do their own blowouts anyway, I'd rather be the person who taught them and got paid for it," Lin said.

The classes have become a modest but steady revenue stream, drawing eight to twelve clients per session. Lin says the classes have also indirectly supported her color and cut business, as students who master at-home blowouts still return regularly for services that require professional expertise.

She acknowledges the shift required rethinking how she measured salon success, moving away from blowout volume as a core metric toward overall client relationship value across services.
