Penn State Research Spinout Raises Seed Round for Crop Diagnostics

Dr. Aisha Bello spent six years researching early-stage plant disease detection at Penn State before deciding the technology was more useful outside a lab than published in another journal article. Her spinout company has now raised a $2.4 million seed round to commercialize a handheld diagnostic tool for row-crop farmers.
"Academic incentives reward publishing novel findings," Bello said. "They don't reward turning a working prototype into something a farmer can actually use in a field with poor cell service and wet hands."
The device identifies early markers of common fungal diseases before visible symptoms appear, potentially allowing farmers to treat smaller areas rather than entire fields once an outbreak is visible. Bello licensed the underlying technology from the university through its standard tech transfer process, a path she says took over a year to navigate.
She has hired two of her former graduate students as the company's first employees, betting that people who understand the underlying science will adapt faster to customer feedback than engineers hired without agricultural research backgrounds.
Field trials with several central Pennsylvania farms are planned for the coming growing season.
