A Third-Generation Steel Fabricator Navigates a Delicate Succession

Tom Wachowski has run his family's steel fabrication shop in Beaver County for 31 years, taking over from his father and expecting, for most of that time, that a son would eventually take over from him. Instead, it will be his daughter, Ava, currently the company's operations manager.

"I spent years assuming succession meant one specific thing," Wachowski said. "It took me longer than it should have to realize the person best prepared for this job was already working here."

The transition has involved more than updating paperwork. Wachowski has spent the past two years gradually shifting client relationships to Ava, introducing her personally to longtime customers who had dealt only with him for decades.

"Some of our customers have known me since before Ava was born," he said. "That trust doesn't transfer automatically just because a title changes."

Ava Wachowski says she is deliberately not planning major changes in her first year, focused instead on proving continuity to a client base that values predictability. The formal ownership transfer is expected to complete by the end of next year, contingent on financing already arranged through a regional bank.
